Google Ads vs Facebook Ads: Which Is Better for Gulf Coast Businesses?

This is the question we get more than almost any other: "Should I do Google or Facebook?" The answer, like most things in marketing, is "it depends." But here's a framework that'll help you figure out what's right for your business on the Gulf Coast.

    The Fundamental Difference

Google Ads captures existing demand. Someone searches "plumber Pensacola" — they already have a problem and they're looking for a solution. Your ad shows up, they click, they call. It's direct response at its purest.

Facebook Ads creates demand. Someone's scrolling Instagram, they see a stunning photo of your beachfront restaurant with a special weekend menu — now they want something they weren't even thinking about two seconds ago. It's interruption-based marketing, but done well, it's incredibly powerful.

    When Google Ads Wins

    Google is generally better when:

    • People are actively searching for your service. Home services (roofing, HVAC, plumbing), legal, medical, and real estate in markets like Mobile and Pensacola where there's year-round search volume.

    • Your product solves an urgent problem. AC repair in July? Emergency plumber? People Google these things — they don't browse Facebook looking for them.

    • You have a higher price point. The cost per click on Google can be $5-$30+ depending on the industry, but if your average job is worth $5,000-$10,000, the math works.

    When Facebook Ads Wins

Facebook (and Instagram) typically outperform when:

    • Your product is visual. Restaurants, hotels, vacation rentals, boutiques, fitness studios — anything where a beautiful image or video can trigger desire. A Gulf Shores restaurant showing off their Gulf-to-table catch of the day? That's a Facebook ad that converts.

    • You're building awareness. New businesses that people don't know to search for yet. A new boutique in Fairhope needs people to discover them — Facebook puts you in front of the right demographic before they ever think to Google you.

    • You need to reach tourists before they arrive. This is huge for Gulf Coast tourism businesses. You can target people in Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, and Dallas who are planning beach trips — weeks before they show up. You can't do that with Google Search because they're not searching yet.

    The Gulf Coast Playbook

Here's what we typically recommend for different business types on the Gulf Coast:

Restaurants & Bars: Facebook first. Visual content drives foot traffic. Use Google for branded searches and "near me" queries.

Vacation Rentals & Hotels: Both. Facebook for awareness and retargeting. Google to capture the "Orange Beach beachfront condo rental" searches.

Home Services & Contractors: Google first. People search for these services when they need them. Facebook for retargeting and reviews.

Retail & Boutiques: Facebook and Instagram. Visual platforms drive discovery. Google Shopping for e-commerce.

Professional Services: Google first. Lawyers, dentists, accountants — people search for these. Facebook for retargeting and brand credibility.

    Budget Allocation

If you can only afford one platform, pick the one that matches your business type above. If you have budget for both, a common split is 60/40 — with the majority going to whichever platform drives your highest-quality leads.

Start with a minimum of $1,000-$1,500/month on your primary platform. Less than that and you won't generate enough data to optimize effectively. You'll think "ads don't work" when really you just didn't give the algorithm enough to learn from.

    The Real Secret

The businesses that win aren't choosing one or the other — they're building a system where both platforms work together. Someone sees your Facebook ad, visits your website, doesn't convert, then Googles your business name three days later and books. That's the customer journey in 2026, and you need presence on both platforms to capture it.

At Blue Heron, we manage paid advertising across both platforms for Gulf Coast businesses. We'll tell you exactly where to put your money based on your specific business, market, and goals — not a generic formula.

    Not sure where to start?

We'll analyze your business and tell you exactly which platform (or both) will give you the best return.
